Actor Sunny Deol on Tuesday unveiled the first motion poster of his much-awaited period drama Batwara 1947, officially announcing that the film will hit theatres on August 14, coinciding with the Independence Day weekend. The film, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, was previously titled Lahore 1947.

The motion poster offers a glimpse into the emotional and turbulent backdrop of India’s Partition, hinting at a story rooted in courage, sacrifice and human resilience. Featuring Sunny Deol in a powerful avatar, the film also stars Preity Zinta, Karan Deol, Shabana Azmi and Ali Fazal in key roles.

The title change from Lahore 1947 to Batwara 1947 had been speculated for months before being officially confirmed. Industry reports suggest the new title was chosen to better reflect the film’s central theme of Partition while avoiding potential political sensitivities.

The project marks the much-anticipated reunion of Sunny Deol and filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi, a duo known for delivering memorable films in the past. It also represents a notable collaboration between Deol and producer Aamir Khan. The story is inspired by noted playwright Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed work and explores the human consequences of the 1947 division of the Indian subcontinent.

With the first look generating significant buzz across social media, the makers are expected to intensify promotions in the coming weeks. A teaser is reportedly scheduled for release later this month, building anticipation ahead of what is shaping up to be one of the most awaited Bollywood releases of the year.
