Washington, August 19 (Post Bureau): US President Donald Trump has claimed that a “very good” agreement has been reached between the US and Canada, although its final documentation is still pending. It is noteworthy that Trump has postponed the new 50 percent tariffs imposed on some goods coming from Canada for three days. Trump said that new tariffs will not be imposed on American goods going to Canada now. He also indicated that the tariffs on Canadian automobiles Some existing tariffs could be reduced. On the other hand, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney did not call the agreement final. He said that the two countries had had “significant discussions” but that work on some key issues remained. The US has postponed the implementation of the 50 per cent tariff until the end of August 21. Canadian Trade Minister Dominique LeBlanc said he was confident that Canada’s agricultural supply-management system would be secure. Trump also raised the possibility of restarting the Keystone XL pipeline in his statement. On the other hand, Prime Minister Carney’s statement made no mention of the pipeline. Meanwhile, Canadian Conservative leader Pierre Poliyev has said that Canada is using its strategic minerals and oil as a key leverage for a better trade deal with the US. All eyes are now on the next three days, as during this time the two countries will have to finalize the terms of the agreement.
