Ottawa, August 5 (Post Bureau): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that Canada’s stance in trade talks with the US is already “quite tough”. And we do not need to change our strategy at this time. He said that talks between the two countries are continuing constructively. US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs of 50 percent on many products coming from Canada from August 19. On this matter, Carney said that there is still time for negotiations and the two sides are continuously discussing many issues. Carney said that Canada’s Minister of Trade with the United States, Dominique LeBlanc, and Chief Trade Negotiator Janice Sharett are currently meeting with US officials in Washington to resolve the trade dispute. The US says the new tariffs are being imposed in response to Canada’s provincial alcohol restrictions, dairy supply management system and some automobile quotas. Meanwhile, Canada is trying to reduce tariffs on various sectors, including steel and aluminum, through talks between the two countries. Carney did not give specifics about possible retaliatory measures, but said Canada has several options to protect its interests.
