Ottawa, July 15 (Post Bureau): The deadline to apply for the early retirement incentive plan launched by the federal government of Canada as part of its plan to reduce the number of government employees is now just 10 days away. According to the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, as of July 14, a total of 8,590 employees have applied for this plan, of which 6,313 applications have met the eligibility criteria. Only 23 applications have been rejected. Under this plan, eligible employees will be able to retire immediately with a pension based on their years of service without any pension reduction. Applications The deadlineis July 24, 2026, and the selected employees will have to retire by January 20, 2027. The government has made it clear that not every application will be automatically approved, even if eligible.
The head of each department will ensure that the services provided to the public and the performance of the department are not affected despite the reduction in the number of employees.
The Government of Canada has set a goal of reducing 28,000 positions in the federal public service by 2029.
A large number of these positions will be vacated through natural retirement and this early retirement plan.
