Gautam Gambhir has faced some serious scrutiny ever since becoming the Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. And now that India is starting a new era in Test Cricket with Shubman Gill as their captain going forward, Gambhir as the head coach will be under a heap of pressure to get the Indian team on the right track starting from the England series.
Gambhir in the recent press conference talked about the amount of pressure he is under every time he is representing India irrespective of the result of the series. He stated that he is always under pressure whether it was in the New Zealand series last year or the Champions Trophy last month or the upcoming England series and nothing changes for him.
Gambhir said, “I am always under pressure irrespective of whether we got the results or not. If you would have asked me this question after the New Zealand (series), I would have said ‘yes, I am under pressure’. After Australia (tour), I would have said ‘yes, I am under pressure’. After the Champions Trophy, I am still under pressure because me being the coach, you always want the results. Every game you are part of this team, you want to get the results.”
Shubman Gill who was also present at the press conference was asked about what style of captaincy he would be following going into his first series as a full-time captain of the nation. Gill stated that there is no particular style he will follow and would just focus on communicating better with his teammates.
“There is no particular style that I want to follow. I like to communicate with the players, make them feel secure, talk to them (about) their weaknesses and strengths, giving them comfort and bond with them… it is very important when you are a captain of any team. The players can give their 100 percent only when they feel very secure,” Gill said.
India will be touring England for a 5-match Test series that will start on June 20th. This series will kick off the World Test Championship Cycle for the next two years. Gill will also begin his captaincy tenure and will be looking to start it on a high.
