In the early hours of October 8, 2024, two shophouses at 84 and 85 Syed Alwi Road in Singapore’s vibrant Little India district partially collapsed, injuring six individuals. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received alerts about the incident around 1:30 AM and quickly dispatched emergency teams, including firefighters and search dogs, to the scene.

Witnesses reported a loud explosion prior to the collapse, prompting safety measures to mitigate potential gas hazards. Firefighters rescued one person trapped on the second floor due to a blocked staircase. Two of the injured were taken to Singapore General Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treatment, while four others declined hospitalization after being assessed for minor injuries.

The affected shophouses housed Paakashala Singapore, an Indian vegetarian restaurant, and Nirja Mega Mart, a grocery store. Significant damage was reported at Paakashala, with wires hanging from the ceiling and its outdoor tent severely distorted. Fortunately, no one was found trapped under the debris, and adjacent buildings were deemed safe.

Local residents expressed shock at the incident. A nearby resident described hearing a loud noise that resembled an explosion but saw no flames or fire. Evacuations occurred at nearby hotels as a precautionary measure, with guests returning only hours later.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, although preliminary reports suggest a possible gas explosion may have triggered the incident. The Building and Construction Authority is involved in assessing the situation further.

Little India is known for its rich cultural heritage and bustling markets, making this incident particularly alarming for both locals and tourists alike. As investigations continue, authorities are focused on ensuring the safety of the area and preventing future occurrences.
